Why Do We Include Elderberry in our Vitamin Formula?

What is an elderberry vitamin?

Sambucus nigra, commonly called the elderberry, is a complex flowering plant in the Adoxaceae family native to most of Europe. Other names for this fruit include elder, black elder, European elder, European elderberry, and European black elderberry. It thrives in wet and dry conditions with fertile soil and full sun.

In addition to the Sambucus growing in Europe, about 30 other types of elderberries grow worldwide. However, the elderberry fruit growing in Europe is the species most noted for health and healing benefits. Indeed, Hippocrates, the so-called father of medicine, called the elderberry his medicine chest.

Each leaf on an elderberry tree grows between 2 and 12 inches long. The tree bears small white flowers in late spring, followed by tiny black, blue-black, or red berries.

In addition to its healing properties, the black elderberry has its piece of folklore. Some traditions say it wards off evil and protects against witches. Others believe that when the tree is full of fruit witches congregate under it. Or, if an elderberry tree was cut down a spirit called Elder Mother would be released and take revenge.

What are elderberry vitamin benefits?

There are many health benefits to consuming elderberry, including:

Elderberry may limit the length and severity of cold and flu symptoms

Every year, Americans contract between nine and 35 million cases of influenza. US adults also contract, on average, two- or three instances of the common cold each. These maladies are currently treated with over-the-counter medicines or antibiotics.

The Sambucus elderberry has shown antiviral activity against viruses, including the common cold and influenza. The prime reason is that elderberries contain many active chemicals — including anthocyanins — that bolster immune health and have anti-viral effects.

Studies show that the health benefits of elderberry supplements taken at the onset of upper respiratory symptoms substantially reduce overall disease duration.

Elderberry is high in antioxidants

The antioxidants found in the elderberry protect your body against free radicals. Free radicals are the molecules generated when your body breaks down food. Those play a role in heart disease, cancer, and other medical conditions.

In addition, antioxidants are thought to slow the aging process and help overall good health.

Elderberries get their antioxidants from anthocyanin and flavanol. These phytochemicals go to work within the body and protect against free radicals, and are an immune support supplement.

Reduce inflammation with elderberry

Elderberries contain macrophages that provide immune support by surrounding unhealthy microbes and removing them from your system.

Studies indicate that these same macrophages can cause inflammation. The elderberry limits their activity, which benefits those suffering from inflammatory conditions.

Does elderberry lead to good heart health?

Your heart will thank you for ingesting elderberries, which help limit the fat in your blood and reduce cholesterol in the aorta and liver.

Plus, the polyphenols contained in elderberries help reduce blood pressure.

Elderberry may destroy tumors

Because elderberries stimulate the immune system, they may help cancer patients by suppressing the formation of tumors that spread cancer around the body.

Elderberries increase the levels of cytokines —cells that are crucial in fighting tumors and help prevent the spread of different types of cancers.

Elderberry products are not advised as the first-line treatment of cancer. However, a stimulated immune system can be beneficial when combined with other cancer treatments.

What are the side effects of elderberry supplements?

Never exceed the recommended dosage. The elderberry can also act as a diuretic; if you are already taking medicines that stimulate urination, talk to a healthcare professional before taking elderberry supplements.

As previously mentioned, elderberry stimulates the immune system. For that reason, patients who are currently taking immunosuppressants should avoid this fruit.

Patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis should also refrain from ingesting elderberries.

Because of serious potential risks, elderberry is not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women.

If you experience side effects from taking elderberry vitamins, stop using them immediately and seek medical advice.

Why trust VitaminMD with your vitamin formulations?

The VitaminMD Story

Dr. David Nazarian developed VitaminMD as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. He saw his patients’ diets lacked an all-inclusive vitamin — an essential immunity boost that optimizes overall health. He also noticed that most of his patients were vitamin D deficient and unaware of its many problems.

Many patients asked Dr. Nazarian what to take to boost their immune systems and keep their bodies strong against infections, but there wasn’t one product with all the necessary ingredients. Our custom vitamin packets contain elderberry syrup in a form of powder due to all its added benefits.

About VitaminMD

There is a wide variety of multivitamins available to the public. Unfortunately, no single multivitamin has been specifically formulated to meet today’s needs. VitaminMD’s vitamin packets and vitamin formulas contain many ingredients that can’t be found in a single product. Our vitamin supplements are easy to drink, great tasting, and absorb better than tablets. VitaminMD was formulated by an M.D. on the pandemic frontlines with the specific purpose of meeting today’s health needs.

Many patients do not like to take multiple tablets (11% of the U.S. population). A VitaminMD elixir or vitamin packets deliver a powerful and comprehensive dose of all the necessary vitamins that boost the immune system and support overall health. Other vitamins often lack main ingredients — meaning patients must take multiple tablets to meet all their needs.

Many people are deficient in vitamin D and popular immunity drinks on the market today lack enough vitamin D. VitaminMD has the necessary dosage of vitamin D and other great ingredients that boost immunity and optimize overall health.
